Granite Countertops Price

How much should I pay? The Price for Granite has changed significantly in the last 10 years. With the down turn in the housing market, the availability of certain stone and the influx of home renovations to grab market share the price has dropped. Every market is slightly different but for the most part you can have granite countertops in your home for around $40/square foot.

Granite is categorized by a couple of factors. Most granite sold at these lower prices is call commercial or level 1. These are indicators of the quality of the stone that is being produces as well as where and the costs associated to taking that particular stone from the ground to your kitchen.

Stones can be classified as exotic. Which my understanding simply means that they are typically are pretty wild in design and may be in short supply. This does not mean that they would cost more but that they may be more difficult to fit to your kitchen and may be more on the personal taste area from a design perspective.

What are the other fees
With any custom made product that needs to be installed into your home some additional fees may result from the installation and fabrication process depending on your unique situation. Some examples are

Sink cutouts are typically extra. The reason being is that not everyone needs a sink cutout and this does require additional man power and time to make these additional cuts.

  1. Edges: sometimes some edges will be included but especially for the more elaborate edges expect to pay per foot for edging and by the edge type selected.

  2. Removal and tear-out: In some case you can do this yourself but if you cannot for whatever reason typically this service can be provided for you by the installers.

  3. Estimates: in most cases I have seen that this is Free but sometimes if costs are high to provide the estimate a fee could be posed to produce the estimate.

  4. Installation: sometimes an installation fee will be extra. This fee typically will include delivery. Special equipment and expertise is needed to properly install granite on your countertops

  5. Templating: Template fees are not abnormal due to the consumable products used to create templates or for the laser templating machine to be at your residence.

  6. In some cases a new sink and or faucet may be required for the look you are going for with your new countertops. Stainless steel under mount sinks is a popular choice but there are many other options as well such as porcelain, cast and granite sink as well. With stainless be sure that you pay attention to the thickness. Typically this is measured in gauges. 18 gauge is a standard thickness used but has the potential to dent. Just be sure that you take your own personal habits into account.. If you stick a steal mop in the sink or wash car parts in your sink… an 18 gauge sink may not be the right choice for you

Granite Countertop Maintenance /How to care for your countertops

With any natural stone product some basic maintenance an care should be taken to keep the natural beauty of the surface. Granite Countertops are very low maintenance surfaces. Some variations between the particular stones exist but for the most part maintenance is minimal.

Polish and sealers are typically all you need to maintain your Granite countertops. Follow the recommendations of the product you have purchased and you should not have an issue keeping the surface looking like new.

From my experience most stones only need maintenance on an annual basis but some new products on the market have what is called a “Life Time” seal and have you apply a rejuvenator monthly. I would suggest doing some more research before you select a specific product for your countertops.

Granite Countertops Design Tips

I have provided some initial design tips for color selection and how to select a color previously so some additional design tips
Let’s talk about the back splash:
• Some like the look of the 4 inch and this is typical installation. Keep in mind that this will add square footage to you order that you may not have calculated on your own estimate
• Some link no back splash. This is a good option if you are going to do tile or something else later but you will want to use something to protect the sheet rock from water and cleaning products.
• Some will do right up to the cabinets. This can add significant cost to your project but may have the desired look that you are going for.

Granite Countertop Edges
• Some edges are typically included and many are not. The more elaborate the finish the more man power and time and the more the cost. So choose your edge wisely. You want the edges to reflect the style of your kitchen as well. If you have a modern style home typically lines are very straight and industrial where a pencil edge or a smoothed would accent these lines. Whereas a Ogee edge or something more elaborate would go better in a country style home or transitional where these details would accent the architecture of the home.
• Below are some example of typical edge styles

What to watch out for when choosing Granite

This about your application whether it be countertops fireplace mantels, flooring etc. and choose the stone that has the characteristics you are looking for in a stone. Typically your Fabricator can steer you in the right directions concerning the strength of a particular stone. In some cases the stone can be reinforced with steel rods when a stone is selected that has these issues.

If a deal sounds too good to be true it probably is. When you start shopping for a vendor. Don’t be afraid to get a couple quotes. This will give you some quick knowledge on what the actual cost will be. Like any product sold you are being marketed to but at the end of the day this product and service is being provided to you so that the fabricator can make money and feed his kids.

Write down the quality and service factors that matter to you and prioritize them. These will be important when you start the estimate process. Warning signs are you don’t receive a call back in a reasonable amount of time. If the time to install is too short less than a week tells me that the fabricator is not very busy.

What is the difference between stones

The main difference is the origin of the stone. This typically the different colors and textures come from different areas of the world. Also because of the different environmental factors you may have variations in the consistency of the store and the mixing of materials as the stone was being created millions of years ago. The more unique the stone and the more processing it takes to harvest the stone the more exotic and unique the stone will be as well as the more expensive it will be for you. Some stone are very hard and some are very brittle. This again is due to the environmental factors and the variations in pressure and materials consumed in the creation of the stone.

Products can vary in width and quality: granite can be purchased and installed in your home in 1cm 2cm 3cm or more. Most homes will have 3cm for countertops and 1 or 2 cm for shower and back splash walls. Some companies will offer overlays on existing countertops. Just keep in mind what is going on. If you have a Formica countertop you are putting a granite skin over particle board. Any moisture that gets to that particle board will change the surface between that formic and the granite or quartz. This will create weaknesses in the application that will soon show up as cracks and other undesirable features. This will also not add to the value and the longevity of this investment

How to choose a granite countertop colors?

How to choose a granite countertop colors? Many factors should be considered when selecting the right stone for you. Cabinet color and design, Wall color, your homes style (modern, contemporary, etc.), Personal preference, and reason for purchase(resale, or upgrading).

• Cabinets, Walls, Floors, home style: These factors determine the color and movement of the stone that you choose. If your home is modern than typically you would not choose a stone with a lot of movement and vast variations in color. You would choose something that is more solid in color and less variation in color from one spot on the stone to the other. Do you want the stone to be the focal point of the room or do you want the tone to blend more naturally with your homes design. You may want to consult a profession when making this decision because it is an important one. If you are thinking about resale as the motivation for the upgrade keep in mind that your taste or even the taste of a specific designer may not match with the perspective buyers tastes so be sure to select a more subtle granite. One that would be least offensive to the most people and simply adds value to the sale. Uba Tuba , Coffee brown and many of your stones from brazil are very common and typically cost less because of these exact characteristics.

Granite Countertop Colors

Granite countertop slabs come in many different colors, sizes and textures. Granite is a natural stone formation and is mined from the ground. These natural formations have variations in color and texture due to the surrounding environment and the natural occurrences that created them many millions of years ago.

Granite being a natural product means that no 2 pieces or areas will be alike. This adds to the beauty of the product and the complexity of implementation. Granite is harvested from quarries all over the world. Most of the more common granites come from countries outside of the United States due to many factors but mainly the demand for the versatility of colors.
